On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, our frequent guest lecturer Carl Shatley shared a presentation called 'Slavery By Another Name,' which traced how African-American citizens were still being kept in servitude after the Civil War thanks to local laws, legal loopholes, and questionable federal policies. The effort to capitalize on their labor and perpetuate the status quo offered a troubling glimpse of how change can be slow to happen when businesses and citizens don't support what's morally right, despite laws that would obligate them to do so. Carl Shatley holds a Master of Arts degree in History from Duke University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from Greensboro College. #piedmontcrossing #guestspeaker #retirementcommunity #seniorliving #civilrights #AmericanHistory #JusticeMatters #enslavement #learnfromhistory ... Austin's friends joined him for the occasion, along with his family, who made sure to give him lots of love and well-wishes. Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., along with his tireless work in promoting civil rights. King dedicated his life to speaking out against inequality, injustice, poverty, and war before being assassinated in 1968. This national holiday also seeks to draw attention to King's use of non-violence to bring about meaningful change and to his belief in the value of public service. #mlkday #martinlutherking #equalrights #everyage ...
